Mutation
Mutation is a low-chance 1.0 breeding result. A mutated egg hatches a pal with higher stats and one of the unique mutation (rainbow) passives. It is not a separate building. It is a roll on top of the normal breeding farm.
Condensation to max rank 48 is what makes farming mutation parents realistic. Cake choice decides whether you are pushing volume, talent quality, passive inheritance, or mutation rate.
Official context: 1.0 / 1.0.5, 287 pals, level cap 80. Sister pages: best breeding combos, breeding guide, chain breeding passives.
Quick rules
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Roll timing | Community / datamine notes: mutation is decided when the egg is created, not when it hatches |
| Base odds | Commonly cited around 1% per egg before cake bonuses; confirm in game |
| Passive grant | Mutated hatch gets a mutation-pool passive |
| Inheritance | Mutation passives can chain through later normal breeding like other passives |
| Fallback | Disposable Implants at the Pal Surgery Table |
| Condenser | Max rank 48 copies |
Exact percentages are patch-sensitive. Prefer your own testing over pasted tables.
Cake roles
| Cake | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Cake | Default breeding fuel |
| Mushroom Cake | Higher talent / IV quality more often |
| Vegetable Cake | Two eggs per batch (volume) |
| Deluxe Vegetable Cake | More mutations and more talent growth (community often labels this Extravagant Vegetable Cake) |
| Special Cake | More parent passives inherited |
Community math usually ranks Deluxe / Extravagant ahead of Vegetable for mutation-per-cake, while Vegetable wins raw egg count. Neither is settled; bake what your farm can sustain (breeding guide).
Mutation passives (rainbow pool)
Names used on this hub and in paldb-style sheets:
| Passive | Effect summary |
|---|---|
| Immortality | Life steal + strong HP regen + Attack bonus in community effect sheets |
| Idiosyncratic | Regen / Defense bonuses with burn and poison resist notes |
| Babysitter | Breeding farm speed and incubation help |
| Heavily Armored | Explosion immunity |
| Sky Strider | Extra mounted jumps (some community sheets say Skymarcher) |
None of these should be treated as wild spawn passives. Outside mutation hatches, the deterministic path is Disposable Implants.
Farm plan
- Stand up a dedicated breeding base with cake supply (breeding guide).
- Lock the child species in the calculator first (best breeding combos).
- Put workable passives on the parents (chain breeding passives).
- Choose cake intent: Deluxe for mutation rate, Vegetable for volume, Special for four-passive inheritance, Mushroom for IV polish (breeding IVs).
- Hatch through normal incubators (egg incubation list).
- Keep Babysitter mutants on the farm if you win that roll.
- Condense final keepers toward rank 48 when Partner Skill or Work Suitability needs the stars (Work Suitability).
Disposable Implants
- Applied at the Pal Surgery Table.
- Consumed on use.
- Mutation-pool implants are tied to high-tier Ancient Relic recycling in community guides (Glistening tier notes are common).
- Ancient Relic Recycler unlock sits in late technology bands (often cited around Technology 74). Confirm in-game (technology in 1.0.4).
- Save implants for finished breeding products, not for every temporary parent.
Implant drop odds come from community testing and datamines, so treat them as rough.
Active skill note (1.0)
1.0 changed active-skill inheritance so the child rolls from the three active skill slots set on the parents. Set parent skill loadouts before you bake expensive cakes.
Condensation link
| Need | Why mutation farmers care |
|---|---|
| Max rank 48 | Fewer wasted copies than the old 116 climb |
| Partner Skill stars | Babysitter / combat mutants scale with stars |
| Work Suitability | Fourth star behavior still matters for base leads |
| Expedition / lab | Condensed parents feed firepower and research gates |
See also the Condensation hub if you need the star copy split.
Common failure modes
- Baking Special Cake for mutation rate (wrong cake job).
- Expecting mutation passives on wild catches.
- Spending Glistening implants on unfinished IV rejects.
- Ignoring same-species Legend rules while mutation-farming Legend lines (legendary pals).
- Forgetting parent active-skill slots after the 1.0 inheritance change.
